Intercultural Communication Questions & Answers

  • Who is Sherwood Fleming?

My expertise is in improving the written and spoken communications of those who use English as a second language and work within intercultural business contexts. I have designed and led seminars for more than 25 years in both Canada and France, helping thousands of participants to communicate more effectively.

I am the creator of the five-step CLEAR method, which has established a new standard for expressing opinions interculturally. It forms the heart of my recent book, Dance of Opinions: Mastering written and spoken communication for intercultural business using English as a second language, an easy to learn and apply method for intermediate and advanced ESL business people, designed to improve how they express their opinions. My motto? “We build our futures together, in the words we exchange today.”
  • What Seminars Do You Provide?

I offer four seminars. Mastering Intercultural Communication is a two-day seminar that provides practical skills for simplifying communication, geared to individuals or teams experiencing intercultural communication challenges. Applying the CLEAR Method to Intercultural Presentations is a one-day seminar that shows participants how to prepare, write and organize presentations that engage their listeners and feature their expertise. It also helps them think differently about presentations, both from their point of view and that of their listeners. Dance of Opinions is a one day seminar that features the CLEAR method that I developed to help express opinions clearly, concisely and confidently in all written and spoken business communications. Intercultural Communication for the Hospitality Industry is especially helpful to those who have acquired an upper-intermediate or advanced level of English as a second language and who are active in client-facing positions within the hotel and restaurant industries.

I also provide interactive short workshops to build awareness of intercultural communication issues within a firm.

More information about these seminars is available.

  • Where Are Your Seminars Available?

I am based near Nice, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region but am available for delivering seminars throughout France and in other countries.
  • Why Is Your Book Only Available as an eBook?

I have chosen to make Dance of Opinions: Mastering written and spoken communication for intercultural business using English as a second language available to as many readers as possible by self-publishing it. The book contains hundreds of cross-referenced links, to make it easier for the reader to understand the intercultural concepts being used and work through the exercises more effectively, something not possible in a printed version. The book can be purchased for under $10 in such online bookstores as Amazon, the Sony Reader Store, Barnes&Noble, Kobo, Gardner’s and iTunes.

Bulk purchases and site licences for businesses and academic institutions are available. Please contact me for details.

  • Do You Provide Intercultural Communication Training with Skype?

Yes, I do, and my clients find that a very effective and flexible way to learn from me in a one-on-one environment. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for details.
